Free guardianship legal clinic set for July 28 in Jackson July 11, 2016 Free legal assistance for establishing guardianships will be offered at 10:30 a.m. July 28 at the Eudora Welty Library at 300 N. State Street in Jackson. Schools require documentation of legal guardianship before enrolling children living with someone other than a parent. Grandparents and other relatives must have guardianship documents filed in Chancery Court. The Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project has scheduled the Guardianship Legal Clinic to assist low income people with the filing of uncontested guardianship petitions in Hinds County Chancery Court. The deadline to sign up for assistance at the clinic is July 21. Interested persons must contact MVLP at 601-882-5001 to find out if they are eligible for services and to schedule an appointment. The free legal clinic is intended to help low income people. Eligibility to attend a clinic is limited to people whose income is at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level. For example, that would be an annual income of $23,760 or less for an individual, or an annual income of $48,600 or less for a family of four. The Guardianship Legal Clinic will assist applicants in preparing documents and getting ready to go to court. The attorneys will explain the proceedings, provide legal information and answer questions. The attorneys are not obligated to file documents and accompany clinic participants to the courtroom. The expectation is that individuals will be given adequate information to be able to represent themselves in court.
